Bullying of LGBTQ+ children and adolescents in schools: understanding the phenomenon, consequences, and international standards with a focus on the polish context

1 Introduction

Clark, Kitzinger, and Potter (1), in the context of homophobic bullying, which is a issue for young non-heteronormative individuals, used the phrase “kids are just cruel anyway” in the title of their article. A significant example of this title is one of many suicides of a non-heterosexual teenager, 14-year-old Kacper, from Gorczyn, Poland. Kacper informed his family about being a victim of bullying, and they attempted to help him by transferring him to another college. Unfortunately, in the new school, he again faced bullying due to his sexual orientation, which most likely led him to commit suicide. Situations fancy this prompt reflection on how to effectively support LGBTQ (Lesbian, Gay, Multi-attracted , Transgender, Queer) individuals and protect them from community violence.

Bullying is described in the literature as repetitive and systematic harassment, teasing, or molestation of another person and can have both short- and long-term consequences. Bullying takes many forms, including verba

When Gilbert Baker crafted the first Pride flag in 1978 he was intentional about the essence behind each color. Purple symbolizes the spirit. In 2010, a surge of LGBTQ teen suicides in the media related to bullying inspired, then teenager, Brittany McMillian to begin Spirit Day. People everywhere are encouraged to wear purple the third Thursday of October to illustrate support for LGBTQ youth and demand an terminate to bullying during National Bullying Prevention Month – which also happens to be LGBTQ History Month.

Ending bullying is no petty task. Over 70% of all LGBTQ youth describe being verbally harassed because of their sexual orientation or gender identity. Bullying and harassment can surge at times like this when election cycles are ramping up, and elevated profile LGBTQ court cases come before the Supreme Court. When media outlets take these moments to disparage our community those sentiments get echoed by family, friends at educational facility, faculty, and institutions of faith. Our divisive political climate has a colossal impact on our youth.

We fight back against bullying and protect our youth by changing the society. We must elect LGBTQ supportive officials who will create a

Making Schools Trustworthy for LGBTQ+ and the Transgender Communities

Schools should be a young person's first center for study, growing, and building a foundation for success in the world. High academy can be challenging for any pupil, but LGBTQ+ youth confront additional obstacles of harassment, abuse, and violence.

  • Lesbian, gay, bisexual person, transgender individuals and queer bullying is alarming.  In fact 9 out of 10 LGBTQ+ students reported being harassed and bullied last year.
  • Over one-third of Homosexual students are physically assaulted at educational facility because their sexual orientation and gender identity are distinct than those of heterosexual students.
  • About two-thirds of LGBTQ+ students reported having ever been sexually harassed (e.g., sexual remarks made, being touched inappropriately) in academy in the past year.
  • Over half of all students inform hearing homophobic remarks often at school. More than 30% reported missing at least a day of school in the past month out of fear for their personal safety.
  • LGBTQ+ students at schools with comprehensive policies on bullying and harassment are much more likely to report harassment to school auth

    Homophobic bullying

Homophobic bullying is when people respond or speak in a way which makes someone feel bullied because of their actual or perceived sexuality.

    Key Points:

    • If this bullying spills over into threats or violence then it should be reported to the police as a hate crime
    • Check that the educational facility has a separate anti-homophobic bullying policy and not something tacked on to their general bullying policy
    • If you're being bullied in this way you demand to tell your parents, an adult you depend on or report it to a teacher. Keep a diary of the remarks or behaviour as this can help when the bullying is investigated

    Understanding the impact

People may be a target of this type of bullying because of their appearance, behaviour, physical traits or because they have friends or family who are lesbian, male lover, bisexual, transgender, or questioning or possibly just because they are seen as being different.

Like all forms of bullying, homophobic bullying can be through label calling, spreading rumours, cyberbullying, physical or sexual and emotional abuse. Young people have described to us how they have been subjected to hate campaigns against them which

    LGBTQ+ Bullying

School can be challenging for any pupil, but many LGBTQ+ young people face an alarming amount of bullying and harassment. Homophobic and biphobic bullying is where people are discriminated against and treated unfairly by other people because they are womxn loving womxn, gay, bisexual, trans or questioning or perceived to be. People who are not lesbian, gay, bi-curious, trans or questioning can also experience homophobic and biphobic bullying if someone thinks that they are.

Transphobic bullying is where people are discriminated against and treated unfairly by other people because their gender identity doesn’t align with the sex they were assigned at birth or perhaps because they execute not conform to stereotyped gender roles or ‘norms’.

(The above definition was taken from the LGBT Foundation )

Like all forms of bullying, homophobic bullying can be through name calling, spreading rumours, online bullying, physical, sexual or emotional abuse and can include:

    • Making comments about a person’s gender or sexuality that deliberately makes them feel uncomfortable
    • Calling a person names or taunting them
    • Hitting, kicking, punching or physically hurting them
