We Need to Talk About Gay Relationships in JRPGs
If you’re a regular reader of my stories, it’s no secret that I frequently delve into RPG discussions. However, what might surprise some of you is my fondness for Boy’s Love (BL) narratives and my tendency to 'ship male characters in the JRPGs I play.
As a gay person and passionate RPG fan, I want to discuss the lack of gay characters and couples in Japanese RPGs and the narrative design issues associated with this.
Asymmetry of LGBTQ+ Inclusion in WRPGs and JRPGs
As the title suggests, the games in this story are JRPGs, but this selection was not by random choice. It is worth explaining why this segment of the RPG genre deserves separate consideration from other titles. I previously discussed the differences between Western and Japanese RPGs, including narrative layout aspects, but there is a specific reason to focus on JRPGs: there's a lack of Queer representation and more complex issues still needing attention.
Let’s start with representation. In the late 1990s, we saw sexual orientation as a more significant part of world-building and ethics writing in RPGs. In this context, we must highlight BioWare’s games.
Games With Inclusive LGBTQ+ Adoration Options

It seems love just yesterday that news programs were decrying games for overly intimate scenes. Nevertheless, numerous titles, particularly role-playing games, continue to incorporate romance into their character-building. It's simply expected whenever a new one comes out.

I feel that the options for "romance" (in both number and quality) are largely irrelevant. Doubly so when the game is as broken as it is. For comparison's sake, the best romance I've ever read in a game was in Disco Elysium, because that whole game was a vehicle for a story about a heartbroken man who couldn't let leave. Planescape: Torment did a good profession with Deionarra's tale and the various companion interactions. Even Baldur's Gate 2 had quality writing for some of them, Viconia's specifically, because you could actually mess them up if you weren't paying attention to the ethics.
In other words, a "We'll bang, OK?" button isn't a "romance" option. Even if it takes multiple clicks to get there. It's still a tickbox. And that's the vibe I get from CP2077.
And still I maintain my opinion that they should repair the game first, focus on show and optimisation and worry about all the other stuff when it actually works.
