Senior US Catholic resigns over Grindr allegations
A senior US Roman Catholic Church official has resigned after allegations he had used gay dating app Grindr.
Roman Catholic newsletter The Pillar alleged de-anonymised data it had obtained showed visits to gay bars and use of the location-based dating app.
The Reverend Monsignor Jeffrey Burrill was general secretary of the US Conference of Catholic Bishops (USCCB).
The USCCB said it took the allegations seriously but there were no accusations of misconduct with minors.
"In order to evade becoming a distraction to the operations and progressing work of the conference, Monsignor Burrill has resigned, effective immediately," it said.
The Pillar alleged:
- the information it had obtained, from a data vendor, was "commercially available"
- it had analysed it to reveal "location facts and usage information for each numbered device"
- one mobile device "correlated" to Monsignor Burrill and "emitted app data signals" from Grindr
- it showed visits to gay bars while Monsignor Burrill had been travelling on USCCB business

Japan bans child pornography possession
Japan has banned the possession of child sex-abuse images, one of the last developed countries to act so.
The new law states that anyone found with such images can be jailed for up to a year, or fined up to $10,000 (£6,000).
The ban does not utilize to animation or to comic art known as manga.
Japan was previously the only country in the 34-strong Organisation for Economic Co-operation and Development (OECD) without such a prohibition.
Opponents of the bill state that freedom of verbalization needs to be protected in a country that once suffered heavy government censorship.
Analysts say there was strong resistance from manga artists, free-speech advocates and publishers.
They said it would impinge on freedom of expression and allow authorities to make arbitrary decisions about art.
The Japan Magazine Publishers' Association, which represents over 90 publishing companies, posted a statement, external on its website earlier in June saying the law could "put a strain" on artists and publishing culture.
