Even though masquerade Balls had been held annually at Harlem's Hamilton Lodge since 1869, it was not until the 1920s—when Harlem's renaissance made it a fashionable destination—that they came into their occupied fruition. The organizers of the Ball—Hamilton Lodge No. 710 of the Grand United Order of Odd Fellows (held at the Rockland Palace situated at 280 West 155th Street; “The site is now a parking lot beneath an overpass principal to the Macombs Dam Bridge” [Quote: Biederman, M., Journey to an Overlooked Past, The Unused York Times, June11, 2000])—officially called it the 'Masquerade and Civic Ball,' but by the behind 1920s, though, everyone knew and (unofficially) called it the 'Faggots Ball.' (Balls were also staged at other Harlem venues such as the Savoy Ballroom located between 140th and 141st Streets on Lenox Avenue; The Savoy was in operation from 1926 to 1958.)
