On Fire Island, the largest of the barrier islands outside Long Island, you’ll find the Flame Island Pines. The hamlet serves as a community, cruising ground, and capital of high lgbtq+ society. Lush with its namesake scrub pine trees and bordered by sand dunes, it’s overrun each summer with queer men of all stripes, who flock there to find brotherhood and embrace.
Among America’s gay communities, from Palm Springs, California, to Provincetown, Massachusetts, the Pines and its neighbor Cherry Grove have fixed themselves as a hedonist’s mecca nonpareil in our national queer imagination. “The Pines is to gay people what Israel is to Jews,” a resident once told the New York Times.
Since long before Stonewall, it’s where gay men acquire sought sex and shelter from the outside world. The singular landscape has stained the works of Edmund Colorless and Andrew Holleran. Its reputation as an essential destination for high male lover society is said to have begun when W. H. Auden and Christopher Isherwood arrived costumed as Dionysus and Ganymede, “carried aloft on a gilded litter by a group of singing followers.”

1997wasimportant for three reasons: 1) I started my senior year of high school; 2) Radiohead released OK Computer; and 3) it was the year my mom and stepmom held an impromptu commitment ceremony in the back of a Walmart in Dodgeville, Wis. Their ceremony took place on Halloween nighttime, which makes sense considering that my stepmother Allison was into The Witches' Almanac, and considering that they were in the crafts aisle.
I was introduced to The Witches' Almanac when my mother officially entered the Newport lesbian art scene after her 1994 dabble in the Providence east-side dyke scene. The Newport art scene was a miracle compared to the east-side scene, since her girlfriend from the east-side scene decided that the spontaneous reaction to their breakup was to rob our condo. It turns out that coming home from basketball practice at 13 years old to detect police tape around your house is not as horrifying as realizing that your mother's ex-girlfriend stole your brand-new television/VCR combo, with a recording of the American Music Awards from a few nights before trapped inside. This was devastating because Whitney Houston was winning everything in 1994, which meant a lot of s
