Genders & Sexualities Alliances, or GSAs for short, are student-run organizations that unite LGBTQ+ and allied youth to create community and organize around issues impacting them in their schools and communities. GSAs have evolved beyond their traditional role to serve as safe spaces for LGBTQ+ youth in middle schools and lofty schools, and have emerged as vehicles for intense social change related to racial, gender, and educational justice.
A growing body of research confirms that the presence of a GSA has a positive and lasting effect on student health, wellness, and academic performance. It can also protect students from harassment based on sexual orientation or gender culture, and improve school climates for all students in the long-term.
In March 2020, schools across the territory closed down and shifted into a virtual room due to the COVID-19 global health crisis. SINGAPORE – Sex teaching in national schools has moved in and out of the spotlight over the years each hour there was concern that what is taught may not have kept up with the reality of students’ experiences.

repealing Section 377A of the Penal Code criminalising gay sex
in November saw several MPs raise the issue once more.Nominated MP Tan Yia Swam urged the Ministry of Education (MOE) to review sex teaching to ensure it is based on science and facts and to clearly state controversial opinions and trends.
She said this would be a manual for parents to utilize in their own conversations at home with their growing children.
She also called on parents – who like her may hold grown up without any knowledge of terms surrounding lesbian, gay, bisexual, transexual and queer (LGBTQ) issues – to take the initiative to find out.
She said: “Let us educate ourselves: What is hetero, homo, pan or asexual? What is transgender or cisgender? What is sexual orientation versus gender identity? Only then are we equipped to instruction our children as they grow and explore.”
