Google's online calendar has removed default references for a handful of holidays and cultural events — with users seeing that mentions of Pride and Shadowy History Month, as well as other observances, no longer appear in their desktop and mobile applications.
The omissions gained attention online over the last week, particularly around upcoming events that are no longer automatically listed. But Google says it made the change midway through last year.
The California-based tech massive said it manually added "a broader set of cultural moments in a wide number of countries" for several years, supplementing widespread holidays and national observances from timeanddate.com that have been used to populate Google Calendar for over a decade. Still, the firm added, it received feedback about some other missing events and countries.
"Maintaining hundreds of moments manually and consistently globally wasn't scalable or sustainable," Google said in a remark sent to The Associated Press. "So in mid-2024 we returned to representing only public holidays and national observances from timeanddate.com globally, while allowing users to manually include other important moments."

It is now official, embedded on your Google calendar whether you enjoy it or not. June 1 marks the starting of LGBT "Pride Month," and the only way to remove this see is to remove all holiday announcements from the app. Thus says Google. (If Google did this before this year, I had not noticed it.)
To be sure, Google is consistent in its protest, at least to a point.
Feb. 1 marks the first day of Jet History Month, while Pride 1 marks the first day of Women’s History Month. And May 1 is the first daytime of Asian Pacific American Heritage Month, while Nov. 1 marks the first day of American Indian Heritage Month. Hispanic Heritage Month runs from Sept. 15 to Oct. 15.

Naturally, this begs the question of why there is no Jewish American Heritage (or History or Pride) month. Or (perish the thought!) White American Heritage (or History or Pride) month.

President Donald Trump signed an executive order to dismantle federal DEI programs upon his return to office on January 20 and ordered what he called the "Ending Drastic And Wasteful Government DEI Programs And Preferencing."
Since this order, multiple high-profile companies, including Meta, McDonald's, Walmart, Target and Google, possess stepped back from their DEI goals. Critics include expressed fears about Homosexual rights under the fresh administration, and in particular concerns about the U.S. Supreme Court potentially overturning its landmark ruling that established a right to gay marriage.
