Myths and misconceptions about the sexual abuse of men can make the life of being a survivor a difficult one, increasing isolation and maintaining stigma.

Below we dispel some of the common myths surrounding male sexual abuse.

Myth: Men can’t be sexually abused.

Reality: They can. Any man or teen can be sexually assaulted regardless of size, power, appearance or sexual orientation.

Myth: If I was drinking or taking drugs, it was my fault.

Reality:Nothing you undertake entitles another person to assault you.  If you had been drinking or taking drugs and someone sexually abused you, that doesn’t make it your fault or mean that you asked for or deserved what happened.

Myth: Only queer men and boys are sexually abused.

Reality:Heterosexual, gay and bisexual men and people who identify as nonbinary or trans  are equally likely to be sexually abused. Being sexually abused has nothing to undertake with your current or future sexual or gender identity.

Myth: Only gay men sexually assault other men.

Reality:Sexual assault is about violence, wrath, power and control over another person, not lust, desire or sexual attraction.

Myth: Sexual abuse makes you gay.

The sexually abused dancing boys of Afghanistan

"If we find any man practising it we'll punish them."

According to Abdulkhabir Uchqun, an MP from northern Afghanistan, the tradition is not just alive, but steadily growing.

"Unfortunately it is the on the grow in almost every region of Afghanistan. I asked local authorities to operate to stop this practice but they don't do anything," he says.

"Our officials are too ashamed to admit that it even exists."

Afghanistan is a country where Islamic values are loved so I asked a Grand Mullah at the Shrine of Ali in Mazar-e Sharif - the holiest place in Afghanistan - for his views on bachabaze.

"Bachabaze is in no way acceptable in Islam. Actually, it's infant abuse. It's happening because our justice system doesn't operate.

"This country has been lawless for many years and responsible bodies and people can't shield children," he explains.

Dancing boys are picked out at a young age by men who cruise the streets looking for effeminate boys among the needy and vulnerable. They offer them cash and food.

Male Rape and Partner Violence

The author critiques the uneven application of the sex

Contesting the interrelated claims that (1) homosexual
pornography does not result in the perpetuation of the same
kinds of harms documented in relation to heterosexual

homosexual male identity and liberation, the author argues that the

treatment of hetero- and homosexual

Sexual assault can happen to anyone. Men and boys who have been sexually assaulted or abused may possess many of the similar feelings and reactions as other survivors of sexual assault, but they may also face some additional challenges because of social attitudes and stereotypes about men and masculinity.

Common reactions

Men and boys who have been sexually assaulted may experience the similar effects of sexual assault as other survivors, and they may face other challenges that are more unique to their experience.

Some men who have survived sexual assault as adults feel shame or self-doubt, believing that they should have been “strong enough” to fight off the perpetrator. Many men who experienced an erection or ejaculation during the assault may be confused and wonder what this means. These normal physiological responses do not in any way imply that you wanted, invited, or enjoyed the assault. If something happened to you, understand that it is not your fault and you are not alone.

Men who were sexually abused as boys or teens may also respond differently than men who were sexually assaulted as adults. The following list includes some of the c

Pride group founder jailed for rape of boy, 12

Surrey Police

A man has been jailed for 24 years for raping an "extremely vulnerable" 12-year-old boy after the pair met on a digital dating app.

Stephen Ireland, 41, who co-founded Event in Surrey in 2018, raped the child at the flat he mutual with his then-partner and co-defendant David Sutton, 27, in Addlestone on 19 April 2024 after messaging on Grindr.

Ireland was also sentenced to a further six years on extended licence, while Sutton was jailed for four-and-a-half years for making indecent photographs of children and possession of an extreme pornographic image.

At Guildford Crown Court on Monday, Judge Patricia Lees said Ireland "took advantage" of a vulnerable child.

The male child - referred to in court as Child A - who had been reported missing at the time, told police they had sex in the flat, smoked a bong which was later found to have contained methamphetamine, and that pornography was played on a laptop.

The court heard the lad had initially told Ireland he was aged 17 – but when he later claimed to be aged 13, Ireland replied: "OK – we just have to retain it a secret."
