Ryan Carnes on Playing Gay, Doctor Who Guest Role

Ryan Carnes, who played Andrew van de Kamp's love interest in Desperate Housewives, recently talked to British tabloid The Sun about portraying a sexually-active gay teen on the show.

Said Carnes: “It was challenging, especially because Shawn (Pyfrom) and I were so young. Especially Shawn, he was only 18 when he started on the show. It's a tough age to take on that role and it was testing, but it was enjoyable and it's from that show and that specific role that I've had the opportunity to move on. I didn't worry people would suddenly reflect I was same-sex attracted and I wasn't embarrassed during the kissing scenes, but there is definitely a hurdle you have to conquer to really receive into character.”

Carnes was in the UK to shoot a couple of episodes for the science fiction series Doctor Who, a series which created the spin-off vehicle Torchwood for openly queer actor John Barrowman.

Said Carnes of the Doctor Who role: “I engage a young guy who's met the love of his life. The couple are at that stage of the relationship where they can't get enough of each other – but then suddenly something strange happens. I sort of become a pig. I receive cau

Ryan Carnes is just dynamite on General Hospital these days as Lucas Jones, a role he played long ago and reclaimed last month with confidence and skill.

The actor recently chatted with soap opera guru Michael Fairman and I want to provide you with some excerpts:

MICHAEL:

Q. One of the crucial moments in Lucas’ storyline happens this week when Julian learns that his biological son is gay.  Where do you dream that story ultimately goes?  GH certainly has an opportunity to tell a story of a male struggling to come to terms and acceptance of his son, and if he can give eventually give him unconditional love.

A. I honestly don’t comprehend where that storyline is going to go.  I don’t know if Julian will be able to find a place in his heart to receive his son the way he is, or what they are going to do with that.  Either way, it’s definitely vital to the storyline because so many young people, young adults, middle-aged adults, people of all ages, deal with issues of acceptance, whether it’s about sexuality or something else, and being accepted by family members, friends, their peers, or socie

In one memorable scene Eva Longoria's Gaby is seen kissing him to support him get to grips with his real sexuality.

As well as appearing in the early 2000s exhibit - which delves into the lives of the residents of the fictional Wisteria Lane - he had a role in another US hit.

He was in telly soap General Hospital in the recast role of Lucas Jones, appearing in two stints.

Ryan also appeared in two episodes of Doctor Who in 2007 in a two-parter position in New York.

But many fans loved the fresh look the former Desperate Housewives star has pioneered since then.

One wrote: "Love you with the drawn-out hair I think it's sexy and looks excellent on you."

Ryan Carnes

Ryan Carnes' first role as an actor came in 2004 when he became the ninth actor to act the role of Lucas Jones on the ABC soap opera "General Hospital." Prior to his acting work, Carnes graduated from Duke University, where he was a member of the Duke marching band famous as DUMB. Carnes is an accomplished drummer, having over 15 years of experience with the instruments, and has worked on a number of musical collaborations. Carnes followed up his labor in "General Hospital" with an appearance on "Desperate Housewives." Though he played gay characters in both of these roles, as successfully as in the 2004 film "Eating Out," Carnes has stated in squeeze interviews that he is not same-sex attracted. In 2008 Carnes appeared in the straight-to-DVD horror motion picture "Trailer Park of Terror" about a group of troubled youth returning from an outdoor character-building retreat in the mountains, who grow disoriented and disoriented in the woods after their bus crashes and are forced to disburse the night in an abandoned trailer park. In keeping with a grim theme, Carnes worked in 2010 on "Suicide Dolls," about two girls who plan a suicide pact and choose to record their last 24 hours on earth.
