There’s plenty about it on these here internets. Basically, it’s a familiar story. Back in the day, he supposedly was fairly open about it. He’s reported to have been a regular at WeHo gay clubs back when he was on Growing Pains. Apparently, he was ready to publicly come out, but his career took off and CAA (a colossal powerful talent agency) said no.
He’s been “soft” outed a few times. Here’s a bit on that:

My take is that these guys can get all the sexual partners they want of any persuasion, so they don't marry unless they get bored and desire to do the family/kids thing. There's a signal when the whole modelizer thing starts to observe pathetic and having youthful kids actually makes you seem relatively younger--if you're 60 with a five-year-old, no one's calling you "Grandpa." If he is gay, by the way, he'll still marry a woman, but probably with an understanding--she has the kids, they do the family thing and a male partner is also around.
Leo's got a rare years of sex, drugs, rock and roll before he has to embrace being middle-aged--50-55 seems to be the usual age for stars of his caliber.

I was in Bungalow 89 of the Chateau Marmont, the old hotel where the stars rest. The hotel is tucked behind a wall, off Sunset Boulevard, just west of Laurel Canyon, right in the heart of Hollywood. Bungalow 89 is in the cottage area, apart from the main building, where the pool is. It was dusk.
Bungalow 89 is not renowned like Bungalow 3 (Belushi) or Bungalow 2 (Rebel Without a Cause). It is only celebrated in my control mind, because it’s where I first met Gus Van Sant, and because I have been living in it for the past nine months while they do repairs on my dwelling. When I met Gus here, he sat in the comfy chair in the living room and played a little red guitar and talked to me. It was back when he was casting the supporting roles for his film about Kurt Cobain’s last days alive. The role he liked me for eventually went to Lukas Haas, the kid from Witness, with Harrison Ford.
