LGBTQ&A

Mark Segal moved to New York Capital in May of 1969 and a month later start himself at The Stonewall Inn as the now-infamous police raid began.

"The police came in, pretended that they were doing their duty, got their remunerate off," he says. "The difference here was they barged in, they threw people up against the wall, they extorted money from some of the older people, they harassed the performative queens. It was pretty violent."

Stonewall sparked Mark Segal's lifelong commitment to campaign, which memorably included interrupting Walter Cronkite in the middle of CBS Evening News by yelling and waving a banner that interpret , "Gays Protest CBS Prejudice".

He joins us on the podcast to look help on the last 50 years of the LGBTQ+ civil rights movement and shares the confidential ingredient that underlies all of his activism: a feeling of humor.

Interview | Jack Rooke

Words ANDREW WRIGHT

*The below article features reference to suicide and spoilers for Big Boys Season 3.

The late Princess Diana is referenced eight times, Jack Rooke tells me, in Season 3 of Big Boys — the terminal outing of his lauded Channel 4/Hulu comedy-drama released earlier this month. “The ice-creams in Margate are to Princess Di for,” one character exclaims. Another names her child Diana-Camilla in a double-barrelled statement of sisterhood. Rooke has a theory that if the overdue Princess was alive today, she would watch the raucous but affecting stare at university years, friendship, identity, and mental health on her sofa, alongside George Michael, as participants on Celebrity Gogglebox.

Rooke dedicated the first episode of Big Boys’ latest season to Michael’s infamous 2011 tweet on the merits of gay sex. “I couldn’t compose a show where a character loses their gay anal virginity in Greece without mentioning George Michael,” the 31-year-old laughs. “That would have felt appreciate blasphemy.”

He's right. We agree also, on a weekday afternoon in Soho’s Dean Street Townhouse, that Diana would own adopted a more progressive celebrity-esque profile

Sweetie, we're all alone, even when we're with men.
You tell her, Mr. Sister.
My advice to you, is to include that fact...
...slap on some armor and leave through life like I do.
Enjoying men but not expecting them to fill you up.
-Except when, well, you understand. -We know, we know.
Excuse me, I was wondering if you'd appreciate to dance.
Thanks, but tonight it's just us girls.
I'm William, one of the club owners.

If you ever feel like a boogie, we could have some fun.
I'm impressed, not dumping us for a guy.
Is that the kind of girl you think I am?

Defining Authenticity

Dani Jackson Smith [00:00:01] It's who you are at work after hours and back at home. Exploring every layer, finding out what makes you uniquely you and letting that shine back out into the world. It's genuine 365, a podcast that takes a glimpse into how some of the most inspiring people among us express themselves and make magic happen. I'm your host, Dani Jackson Smith, VP at Edelman by day, community enthusiast and lover of the people always. Hola wonderful people. This is our first episode and our first roundtable discussion. I'm so excited to include our international co-host Delicia Tan, Rafael Franco and Jermaine Dallas on deck as we discuss defining authenticity. What's up, everybody?

Rafael Franco [00:00:45] Hello.

Delicia Tan [00:00:46] Hi, everyone.

Jermaine Dallas [00:00:46] Hey.

Dani Jackson Smith [00:00:47] So I got the idea to make this podcast because validity and the pursuit of authenticity create space for our humanity, often representing us how we're more alike than we are different. And tapping into what it means personally, professionally, in the moment and even over period. But what does it really mean t
