History
The building at 208 West 13th Street was originally known as Ninth Ward School No. 16 when the first section was built in 1845. Later additions were made in the following years. By the time the Lesbian and Same-sex attracted Community Services Center was established here in 1983, the building had operated under a number of different names, the last entity the Food and Maritime High School.
After renting space here, the Center – since renamed the Lesbian, Gay, Bi-curious, and Transgender (LGBT) Community Center – bought the city-owned building in 1984. Françoise Bollack Architects was then brought on to rebuild the façade and work on the building’s adaptive reuse as a society center, which was completed in 2001. The wings were designed by architect Thomas R. Jackson.

The Lesbian, Gay, Bisexual & Transgender Community Center — Finally a Landmark
This is one in a series of posts marking the 50th anniversary of the designation of the Greenwich Village Historic District. Click here to check out our year-long activities and celebrations.
We’ve recently had ten new buildings in our area designated landmarks, which also means ten modern designation reports rich in history available to spill over. They came in two waves — on June 11, seven buildings were landmarked on Broadway between 12th and 13th Streets, and on June 18th, three buildings in our neighborhood were landmarked for their significance to LGBT (lesbian, gay, multi-attracted , and transgender) history. All were part of Village Preservation’s ongoing efforts to secure landmark designation for the area south of Union Square and for LGBT historic sites, but today we’re honing in on one which we first proposed for landmark designation five years ago — The Lesbian, Lgbtq+, Bisexual & Transgender Society Center at 208 West 13th Street — you can read the occupied designation report on our website here (designation reports for every landmarked buildin
